Looking for CPUs suitable for NAS or home servers?
Linus has consistently supported turning old PCs into home media servers or NAS devices. I had two quite outdated machines—one a Dell Inspiron 560 with an Intel Core 2 Quad, and another an HP Pavilion 500 running an AMD A10-7800 Radeon R7. The latter scored 232 in Cinebench R15, idles at 48 degrees, and peaks at 82 during the test. I haven’t run a full benchmark on the Core 2 yet because I’m still dealing with possible hard drive problems. For a home server or offsite backup using FreeNAS, these CPUs might not be ideal due to their limited performance. They could work for light tasks but would likely feel sluggish for heavy workloads. If either unit isn’t suitable, they’d probably be better off being sold on eBay. For cheaper alternatives that still handle basic server duties, consider budget CPUs like the Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 series.
