In reality, Source (and GoldSrc to some degree) is mainly CPU-intensive rather than heavily demanding the GPU. This applies to games like CS:GO, TF2, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Dota, and Titanfall.

Guild Wars 2 requires significant CPU resources, particularly in multiplayer matches. It clearly shows better performance with more CPU power than GPU, and many players have expressed concerns about this design choice.

Minecraft runs efficiently on a CPU rather than being heavily reliant on graphics processing.

You may have covered some of our issues. My son and I just completed our first build a few weeks back, with a 600W setup, a Samsung 120GB SSD, a z97 motherboard (LGA 1150) featuring one PCI-e 16x slot, and 4 GB of RAM. The goal was to start things off and then upgrade as we gained more confidence. We used an affordable G3258 CPU—dual-core, 3.2GHz Pentium. In fact, it performs better than some older i7 models, so it’s not as disappointing as it seems. We’re planning a quad-core i5 soon, though we haven’t made that decision yet. Initially, with the original configuration, he achieved roughly 20-40 FPS in Minecraft. This week we added the GTX 970 (ACX 2.0, quiet and smooth so far), installed it, and still maintained 20-40 FPS. ?? (His Titanfall performance improved, though we don’t have the numbers.) Yes, we connected the DVI-I cable to the GPU instead of the motherboard, and after swapping in the new graphics card we removed the built-in one. It seems we might need to upgrade to an i5 next? For Minecraft, does the GPU really matter much, or could there be another mistake we’re making? Thanks ahead!

The engine was built during a time when the CPU took precedence over the GPU in gaming, and gradually the GPU became more powerful compared to the CPU.
