Most modern AAA games rely heavily on the GPU rather than the CPU for performance. Considering your setup, a CPU-heavy build would likely add considerable expense and may not be practical for today’s titles.

Most often when a game runs on CPU, it's because it isn't optimized for multiple cores. My mind goes to games like Planetside 2, Minecraft, Hawken, and Arma 3 as examples of those that aren't great with multiple cores. There are titles that still use multiple cores even when they're CPU-heavy, such as Battlefield 3 Multiplayer. An i5 4670k is a solid pick for such games because its single-threaded speed helps in games that aren't optimized for multi-core performance, while still delivering strong results for those that are. If the single-thread speed isn't enough, overclocking can further enhance its performance. I recommend looking up games you like and checking their CPU benchmarks to determine if the 4670k is a good fit.

MMOs and major online titles usually require more CPU power, whereas single-player games often depend more on the GPU.

On planetside, Arma, Dayz, with the highest MMOs and the worst ports.

Skyrim works well until a point. Watch_Dogs seems to be the case, and most multiplayer battlefields follow suit. Generally, many open-world titles rely heavily on CPU processing.

I appreciate your messages and apologize for the delay in getting back. Most of these games aren’t really my thing, except for Skyrim which I’ve already finished and probably won’t play much more, and Total War: Rome II which I haven’t started yet but am saving for when I upgrade my PC. I’m really excited about that. I’m not a big gamer, but I’d love to revisit Witcher 2 before W3 releases, as well as GTA V and AC5 if it offers a significant improvement over AC4. Considering Ubisoft’s tendency for poor ports, I think boosting CPU performance would help. I’ll check some benchmarks if anyone has suggestions, thanks!

Starcraft II depends a lot on the CPU. I recommend choosing a better CPU since it will probably keep you running for many GPU updates if you decide to upgrade.

Half-Life? Not really. Skyrim, Watch_Dogs, and most Battlefields are better picks.
