Hi everyone. I own an Asus Prime H310M-E motherboard that works with Intel 8th gen CPUs. My current CPU is a Pentium G5400 8th gen, and I’m planning to switch it to an i5 9600KF 9th gen. The i5 8600K isn’t available, and the higher-end models are expensive and ship from the USA. I need guidance on the process and some tips for a smooth upgrade. Also, will my 450-watt PSU still suffice after installing the new CPU?

First, confirm your BIOS is current. It looks like the 9600KF support was introduced in version 1404, so updating your BIOS will be necessary for the processor to function properly. Regarding the power supply, a 450W unit should suffice, particularly since you won’t be attempting overclocking. According to HWInfo64, my 9600K typically ran under 70W in stock and usually used even less. You might manage with the original cooler provided with your Pentium, though the CPU could overheat. It’s unlikely it will throttle, but upgrading to a tower cooler would be beneficial if you can afford it.

Upgrade the BIOS to version 2201 or higher to enable compatibility with all 9th generation CPUs. The most recent BIOS on the ASUS website is 3202, but it must be installed alongside your existing 8th generation CPU. Refer to the instructions in your motherboard manual for the update process. After applying the BIOS update, you can install a 9th generation CPU and it should function properly.

Updating BIOS to version 3202 allows you to later use an i5 9600KF or i5 9600K. The update process can vary in time depending on your system, but it generally takes a few minutes. Yes, the BIOS is backward compatible with older versions.

The newer BIOS version will still be compatible with the 8th generation. The HelpDesk_CPU page shows which processors ASUS has confirmed work on your motherboard and the BIOS revision that added support. Upgrade to at least version 2201, and all i5-9600 models should function. I don't have an exact update time, but typically it should be under 15 minutes. Refer to your motherboard manual—ASUS provides a PDF there.
