I own a 5800x with a 3600mhz kit of CJR RAM on a B550M motherboard. It has worked well for several months, but now it's not stable at the rated speed. Under heavy load it crashes, only loading occurs during stress tests—not when idle. It's tough to identify the issue. I suspect two things: 1) The memory sticks aren't functioning properly at 3600mhz, which I plan to test first; 2) The CPU might be failing or defective despite the PSU being replaced. I've disabled XMP in BIOS, which stopped crashes under load, but at 2133mhz on a Ryzen it's still problematic. I want to set the frequency down to 3200mhz at least, as that's the JEDEC speed for Zen 3. Since I don't have another system, I can't try a different motherboard or CPU. Could you clarify what timing specifications CJR RAM would need for stable 3200mhz operation? Also, would it be acceptable to enable XMP in BIOS and then manually lower the frequency to 3200mhz, or should I stick to looser timings? I've attached a screenshot of the XMP setting if that would help.
I've worked with TM5 before and it ran smoothly without any issues. It's tricky to pinpoint exactly what's causing the problems, though. I've run stress tests on 3DMark, Geekbench, P95, ADIA, and even tested the GPU on another Intel-based system—no crashes or freezes occurred. That helped eliminate GPU as a likely culprit.
I'm still puzzled about why it behaves differently in games compared to other applications. It's not clear what else to try unless we check the RAM or BIOS updates. If none of those work, I'd guess the CPU might be the issue. Ideally, there should be a tool similar to Intel's that could analyze the memory controller or other hardware aspects if needed.
Have you explored the DRAM Current Capability boost? (Is this feature present on MSI boards?) My system frequently restarts during gaming if I don’t adjust my RAM configuration, even at 2133MT/s. However, raising it to 110% from the standard 100% allows smooth upgrades to 3800MT/s without problems. As discussed, consider reducing the VDDP value; it might be contributing to the instability since it’s near the SOC voltage. A setting around 0.930V could help. Try setting CPU Load Line Calibration to Mode 3—it’s possible voltage droop is affecting CPU stability in certain scenarios. (I’m unsure about the exact levels on MSI boards, on ASUS Level 3 is optimal for everyday use, and on Gigabyte the order is reversed, so experiment gently; Mode 3 seems safe.) Turn off Curve Optimizer if you’ve tried it or encountered negative voltage shifts.
I haven't seen that but I'll need to see if I have that option. MSI bios has been a little buggy imo since I have to manually select the XMP profile on the sub menu, the big XMP red button doesn't actually change anything lol (thanks msi!) I'll try out your advice, I did raise DRAM to 1.4v just to see if that has any effect on it. Hoping it doesn't shut down on load and this can be all good again. I disabled all PBO in bios completely as I didn't want auto to set it to anything dumb. This is what XMP set the ram to under 3200mhz, please tell me if anything is unsafe for 24/7.
This setup appears to have slightly loose timing yet delivers acceptable voltages. It would be wise to continue using it for a few days to check for any problems. If everything works smoothly then we can begin adjusting the DRAM speed and timing parameters.
Testmem5 and TM5 already function at this frequency and 3600mhz, passing even AIDA memory stress tests. It doesn't appear to be related to RAM; I really don't know what else to try right now.
