Looking for assistance in selecting a new routing configuration?
Starting this here for the first time, please forgive any rule violations... My router seems to be struggling with its job. I think I’m knowledgeable enough about networking to handle a few challenges, but I know exactly what equipment will help fix my issues. I live in a two-story home with three bedrooms and two people, one of whom has an Alzheimer’s condition (that’s important later). Here’s what I’m using online:
- Gaming PC needs fast connections but is in a spot where Ethernet isn’t available, so I use a PCIe Wi-Fi card.
- Gaming laptop powers up when guests visit.
- NAS runs a Plex server for streaming.
- Workstation handles light web browsing.
- Two smart TVs stream Netflix or Plex.
- Four Wi-Fi 2.4GHz cameras constantly upload to the NAS.
I think the main issue is those four cameras, which have really drained my 2.4GHz network. I added them because a family member with Alzheimer’s often forgets details or exaggerates things. He has many caregivers and therapists, and he frequently blames them. Most claims have been clearly false, but one accusation was confirmed by the footage.
I don’t have a way to connect Ethernet from the current router to the camera locations, and the cameras only support 2.4GHz. My idea was to set up a mesh network using Google Wi-Fi and use the domes for Ethernet links, but I’m worried my gaming rig could suffer and that placing too many domes might cause other problems. Sorry for the long explanation—any advice would be appreciated.
