Hey there, I'm looking to set up my MC server on some dedicated hardware so my main desktop can actually take a break once a week. I need CPU suggestions for the server. It's not a bungee cord setup, so it'll mostly run a single thread, but I'm not entirely sure—it could be SMP. It should handle a lot of redstone mechanics in-game, support many plugins, and ideally manage up to 60 players, with some extra capacity for future growth. The max I expect is around 20 players, but having room for about 60 is wise before an upgrade is needed. I'll need at least 3200Mhz RAM, minimum four dual-channel slots, and the best option should be as close to 32GB of 3200Mhz RAM as possible. My current motherboard only has AM4 sockets and an Athlon 3000G, so I can't run it there. Any AMD recommendations would be great! Thanks, Eli.
A quad-core processor might work fine for your Minecraft server, but AMD currently lacks strong options. Intel could handle it better with a model like the 12600K, though you already own the chipset so I’m hesitant about upgrading.
The Minecraft server requires minimal processing power. It's recommended to use Intel for better single-threaded speed.
I operate Spigot on an FX8350 and TBQH is my 4GB memory that's causing problems (switches when players move far, and it looks like Java leaks heavily). During startup it uses about 700% CPU, stays near 80-120% with no users. If I could, I'd move the world files to an SSD.
I thought about checking Intel, but then I realized my wallet was upset because we could need a new motherboard. I told it it’s fine and suggested swapping the CPU instead.
Examining the FX8350 shows it’s decent overall, but it doesn’t match all the requirements I had—especially regarding DDR3 and socket type. That means I’ll have to source a different motherboard. Still, the build remains solid! I’m currently using a non-boot HDD, but I’m planning to upgrade to a second NVMe drive for the server since /tpr runs slowly.
