Looking for affordable options to build a DIY semi-smart doorbell?
I'm aiming for a super simple smart doorbell setup. No camera needed—just a button that alerts your phone or PC locally. Works over LAN only, keeping costs low and keeping it DIY. A basic ringer would be great too. Think Raspberry Pi as the brain. Any ideas or recommendations?
I've been looking into this as well. The problem lies that you would need to program the device that connects to the doorbell. (Altho i was thinking of using a ESP-01S instead of R-Pi.) But also the app on the phone. And there lies a problem for me. I cant. Specialy since you want it fast and always on. So i will keep an eye out for this topic. I wish you best of luck!
I handle that task. We installed a system with cameras that runs on 220VAC, while the board operates on 12VDC. I used a NodeMCU, a single 12V relay, and a buck converter connected to the board’s 12V output, which feeds the NodeMCU via D6 and GND. When the door is opened, it sends a signal that triggers a notification in the Hassio app on my phone until the speaker stops. It was a quick setup with minimal time investment. Not the ideal fix for everyone, but it gives a practical example.
Start with an affordable, simple but clever partner.
Next, have her press a button.
When someone hits the button, she texts you.
Then, add a ring and move to spouse status.
He really needs a backup, so prices jump a lot. Probably a Raspberry Pi is the way to go. The thing is, what @y3llowduk is checking on becomes tough fast. You need it to alert someone—two ideas pop to mind: either add a GSM module to the Raspberry or rely on a paid SMS service or another app like Notify17. I think about Notify17 sending emails, but they’re stopping now.
I suspect there won’t be any easy solutions here. It would be great if you could find affordable, non-WiFi doorbells with small vibrating receivers that fit comfortably in your pocket or even under clothing. I’ve spotted one on Amazon, but it costs three times more than a standard wireless, non-plug-in set. Frustrating. I just need to enjoy music without constantly checking deliveries and without breaking the bank on a ring.
I thought about recommending a dog that enjoys barking at people.
