Uncertain if this matches your preferred style, but the Total War series is great, and Empire is my top pick. It has a few technical problems, but they don’t really affect gameplay.

Fallout 1 but 2 is clearly superior. Fallout 2 must be the most engaging strategy game I've ever experienced. It's great when you can develop an addiction to substances and turn into a pornstar.
