I reside in a home around 2500 square feet with two levels. Our current Netgear router works fine throughout the house, but the upper rooms lack connectivity. It seems the walls are either very thick or made from materials that block signals. Would upgrading to a larger-space router improve this? If yes, do you have any suggestions for reliable models? We currently use 200mb/s bandwidth and have four devices, sometimes five.

Check out a ceiling-mounted router. It should let you reach the heart of the home.

My family strongly opposes this proposal. The women believe it will be extremely unpleasant. They can't be convinced. Is there another option?

Display a powerful router versus a well-placed one. Recall Goldilocks and the Three Bears—just right works best. Offer choices like this:

You may want to think about using a mesh configuration. There are boundaries on how much a single router can handle, no matter the size of the space.

Consider wireless N only when its max speed is 300mbps and you're in a clear line of sight, able to cover about 200 yards. Also, connect anything possible; the last time I checked you could get a 1000' Cat 6 cable for roughly $50-70 on eBay. If your single router isn't sufficient, add more wireless routers and set them up as APs in closets throughout the house. Make sure your main router supports GBE, and if you need a small 5-10 port GBE switch, get one.

It might help to clarify that using more than one device for a mesh network will appear much less appealing compared to a simple smoke alarm installation on the ceiling.
