When Windows 8.1 ceases getting updates, will you receive a complimentary upgrade to Windows 10? I inquired since my older PC ran Windows 8 and roughly a week after that it offered me a free upgrade to Windows 8.1.

It's unlikely, though it's hard to say for sure. I think your Windows 8/8.1 license probably won't work on W10. The upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1 never really finished, and the transition from W7/8/8.1 to W10 seemed to wrap up around 2016. I should note that I haven't excluded the chance of another W8.1 to W10 upgrade, but I'm not confident about it.

Microsoft provided free updates for Windows 10 for a while. Now it’s not happening (though there might still be options). If your system is no longer supported, it’s truly out of date. At this stage, Microsoft won’t offer any assistance.

You can still get an upgrade for free. Just install Windows 10, type your 8-key code, and it should work. I’m suggesting this because sometimes certain OEM keys don’t function properly. It’s likely that using the key will let you activate without issues, even if your current PC is tied to the old 8-key setup.

At the office, we recently moved 7 machines from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Enterprise. The new licenses worked perfectly with the old ones, so they remain active as expected.

You can easily obtain the USB creation utility from Microsoft. Install Windows using it and provide the required key when prompted.

Get the Microsoft Media Creation Tool, add an 8 GB flash drive, launch the program, choose the drive, and pause until it finishes.
