Looking for a Threadripper compatible motherboard?
Hi, for a Threadripper build aiming at Gen4 processors, you'll want a motherboard that supports that upgrade path. The Threadripper socket is expected to stay the same for a while, so it's a good idea to choose something with solid Gen4 compatibility. For now, you can look for budget-friendly Threadripper options while you wait. I don’t know of any official deals, but checking used listings might help. Regarding your questions: sTRX4 and sTR4 refer to the same CPU socket, just different naming conventions. The ATX or MATX form will have at least two PCIe slots and two NVMe M.2 slots, with a preference for three. Trying to reduce noise means minimizing moving parts. A custom cooling loop could be useful. If you need more details on choosing a good board, feel free to ask!
STR4 socket (X399 chipset) fits Zen and Zen+ based TRs (1xxx and 2xxx). The sTRX4 socket (TRX40 chipset) is meant for Zen 2 and newer, while Zen 3 based TRs (3xxx and possibly 5xxx) use different sockets. These models are quite distinct. It’s unlikely you’ll find them since the latest generation isn’t widely available yet. There aren’t many people selling the older CPUs. You might want to look at the 3960X to see if anyone is offering them. I won’t count on those magenta ones.
