Looking for a suitable CPU for gaming?
I understand Zen 3 is on the horizon, but I have a project to complete now (until Christmas). The user needs a 1400$ desktop just for gaming purposes, with 90% usage for games and 10% for CAD modeling. I own an i7-8700 (+1070Ti) and haven’t felt the need to upgrade yet, so I’m sticking with it as a starting point. After checking current Intel and Ryzen options, benchmarks, and specs, I realized there’s little incentive to wait for Zen 3 or switch to Ryzen right now. A CPU around 9700K or 3700X seems like a better value, especially since 9700 is still faster in games than 3700X and offers a good balance. I’m considering a light overclock, similar to SilentiumPC Fera 3, but nothing more. My research suggests 9700K remains a solid choice while still delivering strong gaming performance. Also, the upcoming 5600X doesn’t seem to offer a significant leap yet, so I don’t see a need to buy it after Christmas when new releases are expected. Any suggestions on what to get next? PS: I’m thinking about pairing it with 16GB RAM and an SSD like 1660Super or a 2060. Or maybe wait for the next generation?
9700k costs about $80 less in my country compared to 3700X without any real advantage in games based on benchmarks. Having more threads doesn’t really help in gaming either.
Just playing around? Since you can’t even locate a 5600x or 5800x, the price isn’t a big factor. Also check out the Rzyen 5 3600 – it’s tough to find. Currently, a solid 9700k is worth about $250–300, which is better than both the 3600 and 3700x you mentioned. It runs smoother and costs less now compared to those CPUs a few months ago. If you need to buy right away, a discounted 9700k isn’t a bad deal. I’d suggest holding off for a $300 5600x if you’re not sure, but your estimate seems reasonable. I’ve seen 9700ks for as low as $200 at microcenter or around $259 with a promo at Newegg.
