Looking for a substitute for a broken single-antenna Wi-Fi card.
Hello. I'm trying to swap out a faulty laptop Wi-Fi card and am unsure where to find a suitable replacement. This machine has been struggling with network problems—can't connect, miss networks, and connections drop both at home and elsewhere. No other devices have shown similar issues. The driver update didn’t help; I tried installing the Intel 9461ngw but it was restricted to Windows 10. At startup, a fan error pops up and the laptop shuts down automatically. Some sources suggest using the Intel AX200, though that would require turning off Bluetooth. I haven't tried that yet. Could you recommend another card or guide me through the process? Thanks!
Check if it displays the HP part number similar to the one shown. These codes are often available on eBay for easy access.
The sticker clearly displays the part number M09715-002. A quick online search provides plenty of information about this item. Related terms such as RTL8821CE are also linked, showing compatibility details like HP Realtek RTL8821CE PCI-Express M.2 802.11ac card. This part is listed on sites like eBay, Amazon, and Newegg, often described as a WiFi or Bluetooth replacement for laptops.
It might be the reason for your inconsistent connections. Many adapters come with two antenna connectors, but only one is essential for WiFi and BT. The other acts as a backup so that if one isn't getting enough signal in a certain direction, the chipset can switch to the other, which is typically positioned at a 90-degree angle from the main antenna. Forcing the use of the auxiliary antenna (or vice versa) by connecting it to the main port was a frequent solution for older laptops with a faulty antenna, particularly when there was also a screen hinge problem. The cables can be damaged easily as they pass through the hinge to reach the antennas inside the screen. The same applies to the antennae if the lid has been damaged. Because BT and WiFi share the same antenna, and neither is functioning on your PC, it’s likely you have a broken antenna or cable. Upgrading the wireless adapter won’t resolve this issue. I recommend getting a functional HP replacement now (as others have advised) and testing it. If it works, you’re good. If not, you’ll need to investigate a hardware problem further away from the adapter itself.
