I've managed to reach 5GHz on my 8700K before, but when adjusting power settings, it only goes up to 4.7GHz or stays at 5GHz in performance mode. I'm trying to figure out how to get it to boost to 5GHz while still maintaining an idle speed of 800MHz. It's a tricky setup with the ASUS Maximus XI.
It may require extra power to reach 5 GHz. Check HWInfo to find out the maximum speed. A chip that isn’t configured for constant peak performance will remain idle unless something uses it. Once activity starts, it can climb as high as necessary and perform at its best. Don’t just trust me—I’m not very familiar with PC parts behavior.
The i7 8700k can only reach up to 4.7ghz since it isn’t a 5ghz processor. You’ll need an i7 8086k with a 5ghz CPU to achieve that speed. With this board, you’d replace the i7 8700k with an i9 9900k once they’re still in stock. It’s a 5ghz model and my i9 9900k handles AAA games at 5800x without issues. If you prefer staying on the i7 8700k, you’ll need to push it heavily for similar performance—something I did back in 2017 to hit 5ghz all cores. This method worked for the X and should work similarly for the XI.
Adjust core setting to 50 in BIOS, apply the specified voltage, then configure Windows to use balanced power mode.
I understand your situation with the HW Monitor. You're trying to achieve a higher voltage of 1.385V to run 5G without any AVX offset. Switching Windows to High Performance mode keeps it stable at 5G, but changing power settings drops it to 4.7. Back then, you considered upgrading from 8700k to 9900k for a $175 price increase, but now it seems even more impractical unless you find something around $2-300. It’s becoming even more frustrating unless you wait for the next generation with DDR5 support. Have you experienced this before?
I believe it's a good investment. Many games now leverage more processing units. At the start of 2019, when I assembled the i9, its performance matched my 5ghz i7 8086k quite well. I handed it over to my son for video editing. By late 2020, the i9 began showing blue screens with Premier, so I swapped it in for an i7 8086k while repairing it. To my astonishment, after testing, the i9 kept up with a 5800x at 1080p, while the i7 8086k lagged about eight frames behind. Compared to my i9 10900k, the six-core model fell 16 frames. That’s why I moved away from Intel’s six cores and opted for two ten-core systems. I retained the i9 9900k and gifted my son an i9 10900k. I rely on high performance with the i7s and i9s but balance it with the extra ten cores.
