You're clarifying your understanding of the situation. The Steam version is designed to work with Steam, not a physical DVD, and it doesn't involve bypassing DRM or violating terms of service. A more relevant comparison would be changing the Steam EXE to run independently, which would indeed be considered cracking.

You're not sure if Sims3 was the final physical PC title I owned that needed to be inserted.

It's at least a better alternative than trying to fix the whole game, right?

Even store-bought versions require the same essentials today—steam, origin, uplay, etc. The era of just setting up a game is behind us. Now you launch from an *online store like Steam*. It has changed how gaming works, turning a simple install into a full platform. Most users aren’t aware or willing to change.

There are various 'no CD cracks' options available for most games. The biggest platform providing these is http://m0002.gamecopyworld.com/games/gcw.php. Although the site seems untrustworthy at first, it is reliable in reality. Linus has demonstrated it on the main show, and seasoned PC gamers are familiar with this site.

Thank you for pointing that out. I didn’t realize this could be seen as violating DRM rules.

It's not necessary to apologize. Developers and publishers haven't released an official NODVD update for any games we're aware of. Steam and other clients perform adequately.

Retail PC games still face piracy, but methods have evolved beyond simple physical restrictions. Modern approaches focus on digital rights management, watermarking, and online verification systems to deter unauthorized use.
