You're facing a common issue when upgrading systems. If you install Windows from an OEM DVD and the product key becomes invalid after hardware changes, buying a full version can be costly. You have a few options:

You could purchase a valid product key for Windows 8.1 OEM or another OEM version, which would allow you to upgrade without losing the key. Alternatively, you might need to consider a non-OEM version if you plan to upgrade your hardware later. If you already have Windows 7 Home Premium installed without a key, you can still obtain a valid key for the new version by contacting Microsoft support or using authorized resellers.

OEM licenses are linked to your motherboard. When your board matches, you can activate via phone and it should function. If your old system failed and the board had to be swapped due to age, you can still activate using Windows that way. Otherwise, according to the agreement you signed during your initial Windows installation, you must purchase a new license. If you're a student, check if your institution participates in MSDNAA/Dreamspark Premium. Then you'll have Windows Vista, 7, and 8 available for free download. If not, but you're still a student, you can obtain Windows 8.1 Pro Full here: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msca....288438200 for $62.99 Canadian, or consider the online version at the Microsoft Store (possibly available in stores nearby).
