I'm working on assembling a new PC using the AM5 socket. Many motherboards advertise support for 8400MHz speeds, and most include four RAM slots. I'm considering the "ASUS ROG STRIX X870E-E GAMING WIFI" which fits this setup. A Ryzen 9 9950X would be a great CPU choice. For memory, the "G.SKILL TRIDENT Z5 RGB DDR5 2X24GB 8400MHZ CL40 XMP" is available at a reasonable price, though it only comes in pairs. After researching, it seems pairing two sticks doesn't reliably reach 8400MHz. Buying two sets and configuring both to 8400MHz might be feasible, or you could opt for four slower sticks totaling 128GB. Individual sticks capped at 24GB give around 96GB, which should still function.

You are wasting your time. Getting 2 sticks of 8400Mhz to work at all is difficult and 4 sticks just wont boot at all at that speed. Is this for productivity work? There is severe diminishing returns after 6000Mhz CL30.

This setup is aimed at video editing and gaming, and it will soon include an RTX 5090. Regarding memory, 4x 6000Mhz RAM should work, but you might want to consider a more affordable motherboard if the one suggested seems too powerful for that configuration.

The optimal frequency is around 6000Mhz CL30, but running four sticks at that speed presents challenges. This is mainly because of memory controller constraints. Expect limited gains beyond 6000Mhz. We're now seeing 2x48GB kits, making this a viable choice for adding more memory while maintaining compatibility and stability.

Consider using four Ryzen 9 7950X RAM modules together. The maximum compatible speed usually ranges around 3200MHz when all sticks are connected in the same channel.

Possible speed for 4800Mhz? Still risky and uncertain. TL;DR: 4 threads on Ryzen 7000/9000 won’t work.

Two sticks would suffice if I could locate an ATX board with two fast RAM slots for AM5, such as the "ROG MAXIMUS Z790 APEX ENCORE". However, from a visual perspective it appears inadequate, using only two slots instead of the usual four. It seems most AM5 boards come equipped with four RAM slots.

This Intel motherboard could look a bit dull, but a working and reliable system is more important.

I know that is an Intel motherboard, I simply said if it had an AMD version, that would be ideal. I can't seem to find the one just like that, but for AMD. Do you maybe know, if one exists, with only 2 fast slots?

It relates to the constraints of the memory controller on the CPU rather than the speed of slots. Many AM5 boards claim 8000Mhz, but achieving it is challenging. Expect only a small improvement—around 1-3%—over a slower 6000Mhz if you can even get it running. It’s not worth the effort.
