Yeah, that's exactly what I said. I need an app that does exactly like Windows, just with different software. That's it, done.

Here are some suggestions: You can use an FTP server where many clients are available (like FileZilla or WinSCP). Or share a file folder on your computer directly to the hard drive. You could also buy a NAS from online shops or build one yourself. You can even connect an external USB drive to your router. I don't know what else would work offline and just for your own use. FWIW, I have had no problems sharing files in Windows.

I don't know why you are having trouble with Windows file sharing, but once you have the right permissions and power options turned on, it is actually really easy and reliable. I personally prefer this over most of the third-party "file sharing" stuff like FreeNAS or others. I bought a Synology device, but in my opinion, it isn't very secure or safe to count on for backups. It works great just for simple file sharing.

I always had a hard time making shared files show up on different computers, whether it was Windows 7 or Windows 10. I just need something to work every single time without any hassle. I'm also wondering if I can connect my Steam Deck into the same setup. Thanks for the info; I guess using a NAS is probably the best option.

Back in January 2017, I wanted to turn a basic spare Windows PC into my home server. It started working fine, but something happened that made it a bit disappointing. No matter how many options I checked out, one of the commercial NAS boxes kept winning me over. After six years of using it every single day without any problems...the QNAP is still going strong.

Okay cool, NAS it is. So what... are those guides out there? Are they just big external hard drives where you can share files on Windows?

The two biggest brands are Sunology and QNAP. QNAP Systems makes things called NAS (Network Attached Storage) like myQNAPcloud storage, plus services for video and networking. They also sell DAS (Direct-Attached Storage), cloud solutions, and smart ways to keep your stuff safe and grow as you need more space. Both companies have different models at different prices so you can pick the right one for your needs. You can even test their software before buying it.

Sure, so after two years I'm finally doing this. Can anyone walk me through how it all works? All I need is simple file sharing but those prices are crazy (all over $1k) and I think they're for really heavy business stuff. Is there a cheap way to put a 20 terabyte drive (maybe with room to grow later) on my home network? Just for playing movie and music files from any PC in the house. What's the step-by-step process?

$240 plus drives for the QNAP TS 216G. Another option is $190 with drives for the Synology 2-Bay DiskStation DS223j. Both use diskless setups. Click the links to see more details on each model at Amazon.

Imagine you are on YouTube looking for a good tutorial. You should pick something that fits your needs. Think about it: do you already have the hardware ready to go? If so, here is one great option. The link is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IREsPhKTCRw. I searched for "freenas install and setup" because this video has another good NAS software included.
