Looking for a fun, chill shooter to play solo?
being a parent is hard. whats worst is they stole my steam deck. Good news is, my wifey compromised and decided no one gets to touch my PC. So, i started loading up games, but can't finish a game without kids being kids. So, any good single player shooter games that i can jump in and out of, single player, that has some good fun, horde shooting ish or i duno. So games i beat... - Farcray up to Primal - Assassins creeds - L4D & Killing floor, - Borderlands - Titanfall 2 - Battlefield games Most triple A titles i beat the campaign a lot, and got bored of them. Am i missing something? I noticed at one point Farcry 4 or 5 or something had custom maps which were good fun as well. Most of these big title games i know of, but am i missing something? I have Brotato and similar games are really fun for me, and have a few of those, but, i kinda want to go back to a fun single player game shooter. Without al lthe planning. Just, jump in, shoot some bad AI and run through. Other RPG games that are casual enough I dont have to learn too much? There are lots of games i do want to play, but like say, Diablo 4 is good pick, but i haven't read up on it enough to know if i can just jump in and continue. I loved the switch for it on diablo 3, but i dont think there is such a quick resume like feature on PC, and whats worst, on Diablo 2/3 on PC always starts a full new thing, so its hard to finish a quest in my short period. i need a save function that loads where i quit, and is relatively easy to get back into the game. like a linear like story. Sorry for the long posts, just, its hard to work, find a new game i want to play. I already beat my library of steam games i can play, and just realllly looking forward to another game. Is games like CoD Modern Warfare a good purchase? The 2nd one is 50% off on blizzard. I read good reviews, and a BUTT LOAD of bad reviews on steam, but i can't figure out if it just means it WAS a good game, but NOW a bad game. So never got it. Liked warzone kinda, but, i hate how i can get to top 10, and then i have to log off, its a pain.
Warframe stands out as my top suggestion based on the criteria. It's a free-to-play title that genuinely values your time with a solid economy. You can play without spending any money and finish the game completely. While it doesn't strictly mean single-player, you can use 'invite-only' mode to experience it as such. The game offers quick 1-5 minute missions alongside longer, engaging story arcs that are excellent storytelling. Recently, they added Steam Deck compatibility. It runs smoothly even on a toaster or with full visual effects. I've played it for over ten years and only recently resumed after quitting World of Warcraft about a year ago. Before that, I'd play it occasionally to catch up on content. I also like recommending Division 2, though it feels quite outdated now.
Many pre-Black Ops 3 CODs featured strong campaigns. Other titles worth mentioning include Fallout 3, 4, and New Vegas (with ezpz mods). The Outer Worlds Dead Island series also has a Dying Light campaign.
This style depends heavily on your definition of "casual," yet the entire "boomer shooter" category could be a solution for many issues. Short plots, quick action, and plenty of foes make it convenient to insert whenever you need a break from responsibilities. Earlier Call of Duty titles offered engaging one-player modes but often cost too much on Steam (still $60 for games that are essentially ten years old). Recent releases have shorter campaigns that wrap up in the afternoon, so they remain expensive unless you're focused on solo play.
I really enjoyed the Division series... the gameplay was solid. However, when I reached level 20 or so and entered the PVP zone, things started to fall apart. I couldn't fully immerse myself since I kept getting wiped after dying from overleveling and having others equipped. Joined a group of 20 players and still fell behind someone. I also had level blocking issues even though the game was fully purchased. My level problem prevented me from accessing my mission zone, forcing me to circle endlessly just to level up again so I could enter the new area. While I liked the shooting mechanics, I eventually got bored. I tried Warframe too—it involved some reading and seemed manageable, but I wasn't sure what I was doing at first. I didn't enjoy games where you were confined to a ship and had to travel to specific locations for missions; I think I managed to get through it eventually, but I stopped playing then. I still plan to give it another shot, though.
Warframe's latest Duviri update completely refreshed the initial journey, though you can still choose the traditional path. If you haven't explored it recently, it's shown significant progress in refining its systems. Unlike WoW, which took years to deliver basic quality-of-life tweaks, this patch marks a clear evolution. From my perspective, having played both games for over a decade, I've noticed the experience has become much more accessible. Build customization is now widely understood, and complex mechanics are backed by strong community resources.
Oh yeah, the CoD titles are currently on sale or quite affordable. They run smoothly on Steam. Fallout was solid, though I’m not sure about the latest updates. It was a lengthy experience with lots of exploration and item gathering—remember nuking a city for fun and then leaving? XD Check out the other three games too. Overall it’s pretty solid. I used to play CoD on PS3 and loved it, but new releases focus heavily on multiplayer, making single-player feel less appealing. Even Titanfall was great back then, I beat it in a day. I’m looking for some classic linear shooters now—searching through top FPS listings is tough since they’re often compared to CoD. I’ve tried WWZ, which was really fun, but it didn’t have solid save points.
thats great. definetly give it another try. everytime i see it again, i'm like, it looks so nice, but i just go back remember how my initial experience was slow, and to the point it makes it annoying to actually get things started. Destiny 2 was actually good in this regards, but ya... lol, i forgot why i stopped that game, probably the price, or something, i duno
Also Killing Floor 3 teased a storyline even if it wasn't widely known. I enjoyed KF1 and KF2, though the scene is now largely gone due to repetitive gameplay.
Some folks have stricter definitions when talking about "boomer shooter," often linking it to games with a classic, old-school vibe. Others have precise expectations about level design and enemy placement, which can make it hard to agree on what counts as a true boomer shooter. For instance, some might say Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal fit the bill, while others argue they don’t.
Additionally, a few people note that these titles often use outdated graphics styles—either for style or because they were originally built with 1990s-era engines. This can be confusing if you're not familiar with that aesthetic.
