Any router will work fine. If you need automatic on/off schedules, consider these options: It’s likely your only choice. You might use MikroTik and write a script to disable WAN, but I’m not sure how much control you want—especially if they need internet immediately and can’t reach the router. They could just switch it on.

The ISP has defined DL/UL limits for the router. Installing DD-WRT on the Netgear R7800 includes scheduling features in the access restriction menu. A Kong build is recommended for this model. It supports speeds up to 500 Mbps, beyond which performance drops due to CPU strain. Some users claim it handles gigabit speeds without issues. Once you exceed 500 Mbps, the CPU usage increases significantly. The Netgear R9000 offers the best support for DD-WRT, though it's more expensive. Both Kong and BrainSlayer configurations work well, but Kong builds are preferred by many. Consumer-grade routers like this can be purchased under $100 on eBay. Amazon recently offered a sale at $169. Flashing custom firmware is reliable, and these devices are quite durable. For best results, consider Kong builds unless you prefer Ubiquiti solutions, which come with their own firmware challenges. Regular updates to DD-WRT builds are available for free, though contributions help maintain quality.
