In short I made a mistake and before the 30-day return period ended, I removed my processor to test another one. While doing so, the heat sink came off and two pins broke—one was a ground pin and the other a clock pin. Because of this, the processor stopped working. I’m now downgrading from my 3600 to a 5600G and want to try restoring the 3600. I’m not sure if I’m capable, but I’d prefer to do it without spending much. If anyone has a dead AM4 or removed pins they’re willing to sell cheaply, that would be really helpful. I checked eBay but the lowest I found was around $30, which means I’d be creating e-waste unnecessarily. Edited January 28, 2024 by JessicaW420
It runs a bit quicker but PCI Gen 3 is better than Gen 4. With 15 hard drives handling the media for a family of 14, I’m aiming for Gen 4 and also correcting my earlier mistake.
I expected AM3+ chips to share the same connectors, just like Bulldozer. Would you have a copy nearby? Another approach could be repurposing a ground pin from a retired CPU. It’s not ideal, but it might save some effort.
I'm not familiar with the pin size on AM3, this was my initial step away from Intel since the Cyrix era, though it's something I'm planning to explore. It could help reduce e-waste by avoiding unnecessary purchases. Taking another direction seems sensible, even though I didn't realize it at first while examining the pin.
You have an FX 8350 or FX 6100 you can experiment with. It might be wiser to purchase a CPU from eBay for under £5 and attempt the pin swap.
If fortunate, the HDDs should operate at 100MBps for roughly 1.5GBPs. This requirement fits within the capabilities of two PCIe 3.0 lanes. When this device functions as a NAS, your network interface will still impose limits (10Gbps equals about 1.25GBps; 2.5Gbps roughly 0.315GBps). Additionally, based on the NAS configuration, most requests should originate from RAM rather than the storage drives.
