Hello everyone! I’m planning to upgrade the CPU in my existing system. The current setup is: https://valid.x86.fr/ml3qyb – it’s an i7-7800X running at 5GHz, with 64GB RAM and a Quadro P2000 motherboard. My options are: i9-10900X (3.7GHz base / 4.3GHz boost, 4 cores, 20 threads), i9-10920X (3.5GHz base / 4.3GHz boost, 10 cores, 20 threads), i9-10940X (3.3GHz base / 4.1GHz boost, 12 cores, 24 threads), and i9-10920X again (14 cores, 28 threads).

My main tasks are Photoshop and After Effects. Both apps perform best with single-thread speed, though I also use Premiere Pro which needs more threads. The 10900X offers a higher base clock but feels like it’s underpowered due to its low boost frequency. It’s odd that the lowest core count has the weakest boost. I prefer the 10940X for its core count and decent boost, but I’m not sure it’s ideal for my workflow. The 10920X stands out because of its top clock speed and reasonable core count, though I’m not sure if it’s the best fit.

I’m considering this upgrade around $1000, especially after converting to Canadian dollars. A quick note: I’ve tried Ryzen 3600X and 2700X, but my 7800X consistently outperformed them. Maybe it’s due to AVX-512, faster RAM, or Intel’s HEDT architecture. (Sorry for the disappointment… it’s tough to say with just one test.)

Regarding Skylake and Skylake-X refresh components with additional cores, it seems unlikely to consider them now because current retailer pricing hasn't been established yet.

There might be discounts on used CPUs on eBay for your motherboard, perhaps you can find a 7980XE.

Gamer's Nexus holds numerous evaluations, featuring multiple Intel HEDT chips with different core counts in the 3950X assessment. Notably, when searching for Photoshop outcomes, a 9900KS might be worth considering if you're comfortable with slower performance in Premier Pro. What is your Passmark Single thread score for the I7-7800X? You recently noticed you're using that processor at all-core speeds of 5.0 GHz or higher. I’m not well versed in the architectural distinctions between Skylake-X and Coffee Lake, but I assume they won’t show significant differences in raw performance. If that holds true, you might already possess the top chip available until Intel introduces 10nm HEDT or AMD releases 5GHz Zen2+ designs. Generally, if your single-thread score is near 3,000, upgrading the CPU isn’t necessary for this generation.

The CPU struggles a lot with single-thread tasks. Excluding the 10980XE, Passmark isn't very useful for my needs but I expect around 2700-2800 single-thread speeds. The 9900K (not KS) ruins my 7800X in Photoshop for certain work. After Effects works fine except with Intel HEDT for my purposes... This is frustrating because I really believe Intel HEDT pricing is unreasonable.
