Hello, I’m almost finished gathering everything for my gaming PC. Unfortunately, I might have to upgrade my GPU, but Best Buy said I’ll be limited by the CPU and motherboard I already have. I’ve got four sticks of RAM—each 8GB DDR4 at 3,000MHz. The motherboard claims it can run at 3600MHz overclock, though I’m not planning that for gaming. It shows a Z270 Intel chipset and should support an LGA 1151 i5/i7 from the 6th and 7th generation. I bought a 6700i7 with a base speed of 3.40GHz and 4.0GHz max, thinking it’d be better than the top 7th gen 7920 which has a 3.10 base and 4.1GHz max for that platform. According to Intel’s site, there’s nothing faster on the 1151 platform in the 7th gen. My GPU is an AMD 1070, but I’m considering selling it for a 2080Ti. The salesperson at Best Buy told me I’d be stuck with a bottleneck and needed a new build, then pushed me to buy a system for $2,500. What do you think? Am I the less informed shopper here?
This whole discussion seems a bit odd. The fastest CPU for the 1151 socket and Z270 chipset is the i7 7700K, while the i7 7920HQ works best on laptops and isn't suitable for your motherboard without heavy modifications. Your i7 6700 remains a solid choice for gaming, so we'll stick with that. The 7920 is mainly for high-end mobile use, so let's skip it. There are situations where the 2080 Ti might struggle with the 6700, but that really depends on your games. What kind of games do you play? Also, the RTX 2080 Super is not much more expensive than the 2080 Ti, so you might want to think about that option. Edit: Did you mean to ask if you wanted a new CPU or if you already have one?
