I’m searching for an affordable 8-port, 10GbE unmanaged switch priced between $100 and $300 from a trusted manufacturer. You prefer genuine 10GbE ports that support Cat 6a, not a trunk with many 1GbE interfaces. Any suggestions or options? Thanks.

You’ll need to increase your spending. Even a basic 8p 10Gbe switch can cost over $600. It might be tough to find a good deal on eBay at that price. Do you really require those 10Gbe ports?

I don’t have the latest pricing data, but I can suggest looking into budget-friendly models like the Cisco 2960 series or similar 8-port 10GbE switches. Checking recent reviews and distributor listings will help you find the most affordable option that meets your needs.

The 16XG is a top choice for a 10GbE switch. It has just four copper ports yet includes 12 extra SFP+ ports. It’s priced around $600.

Another choice if you're comfortable with SFP+ includes the models at https://mikrotik.com/product/crs305_1g_4s_in (4SFP+ for $150) and https://mikrotik.com/product/crs317_1g_16s_rm (16 SFP+, $400). You can also use DAC cables (available at $30 per 1m length https://mikrotik.com/product/SplusDA0001), fiber-connected SFP+ modules, or SFP+ adapters to 10GbE devices ($65 each, https://mikrotik.com/product/s_rj10). Mikrotik supports a wide range of SFP interfaces, including those from Cisco and other major brands. SFP+ switches tend to be affordable since they rely on additional chips for signal transmission. 10GbE solutions come with more complex circuitry.

Plus one for the Mikrotik advice if you think it won’t handle Layer 3.

My residence features Cat 6a cabling with a PFSense firewall/server supplying fiber internet, DHCP, and NAT services. The home NAS (FreeNAS) offers 10 GbE or near it speeds, but not all equipment is in the same area, making SFP impractical. Therefore, I opted for Cat 6a throughout the house. There are at least four 10 GbE capable devices, so I planned for eight ports to accommodate future growth.

I'm set up similarly to yours without the fiber connection. Cox Ultimate is rolling Gigablast over copper soon in my area. I've been waiting more than a year for my home to be ready for SOHO gear, and it seems like a long wait ahead. If I had to act now, I'd go with the US-16-XG by my name. For a tighter budget, you could check this link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/392174392287. Both options have just four 10Gbe ports, so you'd need to hook up as many devices as possible over direct cable, then rely on Cat 6a for the rest.

You can purchase SFP+ 10GbE RJ45 cables. It’s unlikely you’ll locate an 8-port 10GbE switch within your budget. Consider following our recommended paths and expanding as required. Even then, 10GbE isn’t essential unless you frequently transfer data between all your high-speed devices.
