Hello. I'm working on creating a cost-effective gaming setup for a friend. My aim is to get a Ryzen APU—ideally 3400G or 2400G. I want to push performance as much as possible, possibly overclocking the CPU, RAM, and iGPU if feasible. The main challenge is finding budget boards with sufficient VRM cooling. Anyone recommend a budget B450 board that offers decent overclock potential? I’d rather avoid going down to the B350 model since I need room for 4000 Ryzen series options.

Extra thoughts: Would it be smarter to buy the cheapest motherboard and stick with stock fans, or should I look for something more affordable? I’m aware that high-speed RAM gives a big boost for Ryzen. Should I consider upgrading to 3200MHz? Currently it’s at 2800MHz. Also, I have some old Raspberry Pi heat sinks that could be used on the VRMs—just a joke, but I’m curious if others use custom solutions.

I was thinking about something similar to the Tomahawk MAX, but it's tough to fit it into the budget (he wants a PC with Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, mouse, keyboard, and monitor for $600). This seems like the top choice, though I might have to look for a used one. Appreciate the help!

J urrunio is correct. The B450 Tomahawk MAX has been priced around $120 and offers a solid VRM setup. It's on the edge of being a budget option, but the VRM quality makes it hard to skimp on performance. For your consideration, stick with the original CPU cooler and opt for higher-end RAM. There are likely three levels of AMD stock coolers available, so if you find someone offering a better one at a lower price, that would be ideal.

Get whatever board you desire. A 3400G will likely not exceed 99W even under heavy use. Solid VRMs for a quad-core setup. Take it easy. lol. Do you think the CPU is just 45W and the GPU 10W?

I thought this was a solid plan and it came out just $2 more than expected. Probably I overlooked it on my first check. Thanks. When I initially scanned them, many were sold out so exact prices weren’t available. The A Pro max now seems like a solid option after seeing a genuine price. There’s also a x470 gaming plus MAX that’s really affordable if you take that path. While you’re correct about needing a 3400g, I wasn’t confident the Gigabyte DS3H would perform well. I didn’t mention it, but I was also hoping for strong overclocking potential for future upgrades to the 4000 series.

The issue isn't the quad-core CPU, that's easily handled with sufficient power. The real challenge lies with Vega 11—it behaves like a regular Vega and can consume as much power as the CPU cores if you push hard enough. Mobo doesn’t design SOC VRMs as large as Vcore, which is a concern. Additionally, any design without adequate SOC VRM heatsinks is removed early on.

It seems like you're comparing your 220GE to a newer model. The newer one can handle passive cooling with good heat sinks, even when using the iGPU. If it works for you, my 2700X paired with a B450M-A really impressed me. I upgraded the motherboard later and never faced any issues, even with the powerful CPU. I also used it for overclocking. My Avatar shows the board, though only a small section. Recently, I've started doubting whether VRMs are necessary—this setup feels like a luxury for high-end builds. This budget board supports at least a 3950X, and if I could afford it, I'd upgrade to the best chip and try reselling the board multiple times.

Did you check the MOSFET temperatures from behind the motherboard? Overclocking doesn’t affect your power costs, right?
