I set up W10 using a USB drive and included all the benchmarks, standard driver installers, and DDU. It functions properly for me.

This depends on your testing goals. Are you checking if the device works and stays cool? Then install a Linux OS from USB and run stress tests. If you want to compare performance, a clean Windows setup with updated drivers is ideal.

Absolutely, that sounds much more convenient. Using a small USB drive on a keychain feels way better than relying on an M2 enclosure.

the pc's performance I'm testing mostly includes a mix of used, older, or office-grade hardware. Occasionally I repurpose them into servers or insert a 730 chipset to play games, but I rarely keep them fully assembled long enough to set them up properly. I might opt for a SATA SSD instead since I've faced issues with that setup in the past and thought it wouldn't work.
