Looking for a 13900k or 13700k laptop?
I’m evaluating a new laptop to swap out my current Alienware 17 R4. My main machine is an i9 13900K, so I initially thought about matching it. However, some mixed reviews indicate an i7 might offer better value than the i9. Overclocking isn’t on my agenda, but I could reconsider if conditions change. Two models stood out to me:
1. **MSI Stealth 17 Studio 17.3" QHD 240Hz Gaming Laptop** – Intel Core i9-13900H RTX 4080, 32GB DDR5 (planned upgrade to 64GB), 1TB NVMe SSD (potential swap for my existing Samsung 980 Pro), Alienware m18 18" QHD+ (165Hz, 3ms, ComfortView Plus, NVIDIA G-SYNC + DDS, 100% DCI-P3), 16GB RAM (upgrade to 64GB possible), FHD IR Camera 13th Gen Intel® Core™ i9-13900HX RTX 4080.
2. **Alienware m18 18" QHD+** – 165Hz, 3ms, ComfortView Plus, NVIDIA G-SYNC + DDS, 100% DCI-P3, 512GB NVMe SSD (same replacement plan).
I’m leaning toward i7 options if I can still get the RTX 4080. Beyond gaming, I spend a lot on photo editing software like Photoshop, Premiere, Lightroom, Topaz Photo & Video AI, plus I’m a full-stack developer building apps in Visual Studio 2022. My setup includes IIS, SQL Server, and Hyper-V for virtualization.
I’d appreciate seeing benchmarks from similar models—both same brand and different brands—with identical 13th Gen CPUs. Understanding the value difference would help. If an i7 can be overclocked to match or exceed the i9’s multicore performance while saving costs, that would be a strong factor.
The 13.9 GHz processor doesn’t seem impressive enough compared to the 13.7 GHz one for improving performance.
If you're using it for video editing, this model won't help. For gaming, the 13700k offers better performance and a cooler chip, making it more suitable. The 13900k is mainly for video work.
Unfortunately, so far DELL hasn’t let me set up the m18 with an i7 and an RTX 4080. They’re pushing me toward an i9 if I want the 4080. I agree with the earlier thoughts about the i9 and temperatures. I’ve already watched at least one video for the 12th generation CPUs showing the i7 beating the i9 because of lower heat output, so it makes sense that the same applies to the 13th generation. Since I don’t spend much time editing videos on my laptop, it seems logical to choose an i7 instead. But it’s frustrating that DELL is forcing me into an i9 just to get the RTX 4080. That’s completely unnecessary. It would have been better if I could get a 18-inch screen. Also, I haven’t found any setup on MSI machines that lets me install at least 32GB of RAM with an RTX 4080 and an i7.
Gigabyte is available through Computer Upgrade Kings (CUK). I previously purchased from them on Amazon.com. The model listed is the AORUS 17H by Gigabyte, a 17-inch gamer notebook featuring an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080, 14-core Intel Core i7-13700H, 64GB DDR5 RAM, a 2X2TB Gen4 NVMe SSD, 17.3" FHD at 360Hz, and running Windows 11 Home. It's a gaming laptop computer with electronics specifications.
I’m done waiting. The delay with the Helios launch in the US was exhausting, but Dell’s sale brought the combo within reach of my budget. It offered double the RAM and storage I wanted. Now the project is finished—they’ve wrapped it up and it’s just time for shipping. My setup includes an M18, Core i9 at 5.40GHz turbo, 32GB DDR5 RAM, RTX 4080, 1TB NVMe M.2 drive, Cherry MX low-profile keyboard, a 18" QHD display (2560x1600, 165MHz), and Windows 11 Pro. I’m excited to own another 18-inch laptop. This isn’t the first time—I still have my old HP 18T with a Core 2 Duo from 2009, which still works perfectly.
