I have a BT hub supporting both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. The system has a smart trick where devices switch between bands depending on what they need. My dad isn’t keen on turning that off. I own a Lifx smart light bulb that only works on the 2.4GHz network. If I alter the SSID for the 2.4GHz band and connect the bulb there, then later switch it back to the original SSID, will the automatic switching still function? (I’m not asking you to change the SSID permanently—it’s not something I want.) Do you have any alternative solutions?
It's called Band Steering which makes 5GHz devices join the 5GHz band to ease the load on the usually busier 2.4GHz band. If you link the Lifx bulb to a different SSID on the 2.4GHz only network and then change that 2.4GHz name, the bulb shouldn't connect. It should still recognize your current 2.4GHz network as active, so the issue might be whether it detects both bands simultaneously.
Thanks for your message. The issue started after switching to the new dual-band router—it didn’t connect at all. Even though it detected the network, it kept trying for 30 minutes and failed every time. It mentioned it couldn’t connect on a single band, which is confusing since I’m not sure how the setup works.
Hmm, that is odd, it should see the 2.4Ghz band unless the band steering on the router is messed up somehow. On the router if you have two SSID's one for 2.4Ghz and one for 5Ghz and they are named the same and you disabled the 5Ghz SSID for a moment and connected the Lifx bulb then it should stay connected when you enable the 5Ghz SSID again.
