Currently focusing on improving the GPU/PSU setup (GTX1050+600 Watts → 2080Super+750 Watts), but first I need to adjust the small Ab350m-DS3H v2 MOBO due to spacing problems with the larger GPU (new SATA cables/ports). This was a planned upgrade from about two years ago. I expect I won’t be doing further upgrades beyond maybe more RAM or additional storage drives/M2 SSDs by 2022. The question is: why choose X570 instead of B450 if I plan to skip the 4000 series Ryzen? I’m considering better VRM options, but at that stage a decent B450 would still be available (Asus TUF) and I could upgrade from the current R3600 to a second-hand R3900X and overclock it. From what I’ve read in other threads, the 4000 series Ryzen are likely the last Am4 CPUs, so there’s no need for an X570 since it won’t work with the 5000 series Ryzen because of the AM5 socket.
considering 3900x most B450 boards offers limited upgrade potential. if you must use a MATX setup, the only available choice is the 3 x570 models, with the last one still in stock. the ASRock X570M Pro is a solid option.
Do you think that? Right now I’m mainly GPU dependent, though extra CPU really helps with tasks like baking lighting in UE4. Mostly I see zero value for anything on an x570 unless someone is planning a upgrade to the 4000 series. Even then, switching from a 2000 series to a 4000 feels like a poor investment—just get a solid 3000 series CPU and wait for the AM5 socket. As far as I understand, nobody’s giving up on PCI EXPRESS 4 just because they’re not using it. I’m mainly considering it “just in case” my current 3600 isn’t enough for the future, but I’m not sure that will be true. But honestly, anyone wanting to move to x570 should probably think about it seriously—especially if they’re aiming for Zen3 support. It’s cool enough, but I wouldn’t want to push my relationship with the GF just for that reason.
The R9s generate sufficient power when boosted to work with an X570 board. Memory overclocking performs better with the X570, particularly at larger capacities using multiple sticks. The difference between 4000 and 3000 series models remains unclear. This decision may influence whether you choose an X570 or a B550.
There's a chance that there will be a Zen 3 refresh down the line, and that could be the last CPU-s compatible with AM4. Also, someone who's now on the Ryzen 5 3600 might want to upgrade in a couple of years, and it's better to have Zen 3 support for that day. Zen 3 might be colder and stronger than Zen 2. Maybe a Ryzen 4700X could be a better CPU than the Ryzen 9 3900X... Considering that, X570 and B550 would be decent choices. Especially when the board prices aren't that much higher. Most enty lvl x570 boards have VRM-s comparable to high end B450 and X470 boards. And if going the older chipset route, for upgrades to Ryzen 9 in the future you'd still want a great VRM.
It could disrupt my plans, but what I've learned is the Ryzen 5000 remains on track and stable. I shouldn't be too concerned. Buildzoid shared a great video about top motherboards to consider, which is a solid suggestion for anyone else thinking about upgrading their graphics card.
