After a month with my new PC, my electricity costs have risen roughly 30%. This could be due to the PSU upgrade from 650W to 1000W. When I initially chose the specs, I thought a 1000W unit might be too much, but now I’m wondering if it’s still worth it. Electricity prices have increased by about 16% lately, and my household power capacity went up from 2200VA to 3500VA. While the higher power is justified, I’m trying to cut expenses if possible. My system includes Windows 11 Pro, MSI Z790 Tomahawk Wifi, Intel i7 13700K (overclocked), two 16GB Corsair 6400MHz RAM sticks (XMP enabled), and a 1TB Corsair SSD (6950XT). I’m curious if lowering power usage helps—some users undervolt their GPUs for savings, does that work? Or are there BIOS or Windows settings I can adjust?

Having a 1000 watt power supply only indicates that your parts can handle up to 1000 watts, not that your computer will always consume that much power. To know the actual energy usage, you need a device like a Kill-a-Watt. If you aim to conserve energy, turn off the PC and use a laptop or a very small desktop for browsing.

down clocking also presents challenges, while overclocking can cause issues too—depends on the situation. One game may run smoothly, another might not. Turning off GPU and CPU or disabling Turing cores can help conserve energy, though you might end up building a more efficient PC. Platinum offers some power savings. As others noted, laptops consume less power despite their high cost. There could be additional methods to reduce energy use at home, such as using timers and other smart techniques.

You might consider adjusting the limits, such as reducing the GPU voltage when running games. My GPU handles games well even at half power, and it should work with lower voltages. However, I avoid playing the latest AAA titles.

You can reduce power consumption using tools like MSI Afterburner without buying extra hardware.

yeah but PC hardware doesn't require a paid repair man to choke voltage, just one little program running in a background for absolutely free, no need to swap components, or buy them
