I have an arcade setup with a laptop inside and I want to repurpose it. I need a system that runs both as an arcade machine and a PC for streaming to TVs. I also plan to use it as a server for Jellyfin and similar services. I’m looking for an OS that’s user-friendly, modern, and avoids the look of older setups. I don’t want to rely on Kodi.

You can choose Windows if you prefer. For beginners on Linux, I highly suggest Ubuntu since most online resources are compatible with it.

Nixos tailored for single file setup, batoceraOS ideal for classic games, Bazzite adds gaming support plus container distrobox included. Both pair nicely together.

Linux offers endless possibilities for personalization. If a solution isn't what you need, you can build it yourself. I'm currently working on an HTPC project and have discovered that Steam Deck UI+Emudeck works well for native Steam titles and emulation, while Kodi Media Player excels with local movies and music. Both options remain accessible across different Linux distributions. For multiplayer games, Windows might be a better fit since many AAA studios avoid Linux support or actively restrict it. If you're comfortable with Windows, consider a KDE-based distro like Kubuntu or GloriousEggroll's Nobara OS.
