No, you can't simply replace a standard DIMM with a long one. The length doesn't match the connector size, so it won't fit properly.

Dimm typically means your RAM slots, which have a set size. I'm not entirely clear on what you're asking. Welcome to the discussion! Note: This applies to laptops only—Sodimm isn't compatible.

You have a 2x2GB DDR3 DIMM and want to switch to 1x8GB DDR3, but the seller says the form factor is too long. Can you still fit it?

Searching online indicates that long dimming is commonly referred to as standard dimming. It should function well without a laptop.

Yes, you can use RAM from different form factors on the same motherboard. Just ensure the RAM matches the specifications listed in your system (Intel i3-2120, integrated GPU, etc.).

There's SO-DIMM which is a smaller ram stick, for laptops, and there's regular DIMM, which is the normal size ram sticks. You need regular DDR3 sticks. You also have to be careful and check if your motherboard actually supports 8 GB sticks. Some chipsets had limitations which only made it possible to use sticks up to 4 GB in size. Your motherboard may also have 4 slots in total, which means you could just add 2 4 GB sticks and keep the existing 2 x 2 GB sticks. So start by determining what motherboard model you have - if you don't know it should be printed somewhere on the motherboard or you can find it with tools like HWInfo64 or Aida64 or maybe even CPU-Z
