I maintain my system tidy through regular cleanups and defragmentation, yet lately my PC lags over 20 minutes to reach the login screen after booting up. My setup includes a 250GB Samsung 850 Evo for Windows, a 1TB HDD for games, and an ASUS Maximus Formula VII for MOBAs. I’m leaning toward a full restore if possible, but avoiding it entirely would be beneficial. Clearing the CMOS might help, though its effectiveness depends on your specific hardware configuration.

Attempted a CMOS reset without any issues, but haven't performed a fresh Windows installation recently. It seems the problem might be related to software rather than hardware, especially since new software has been installed. The SSD appears to have sufficient space, and I've tried entering safe mode to check for consistency.

The fresh setup was around 1.5 years ago. Your SSD currently has 63GB available. Safemode can be activated through Windows settings, though you’ll need to disable other services like Discord, Google, Steam, Skyrim SE, and your mods for performance.

Please try loading it again. If it still doesn’t work within about a minute, it might be a software problem, and a fresh Windows installation could be the best solution.

You have options to resolve the problem. You can either proceed with the steps or search for the problematic software. To check disk health, run Crystal Disk INFO (don’t mark it). If you plan to format, keep the drive image for recovery purposes—either by taking a snapshot or copying files. It’s wise to back up your SSD to an HDD, ideally creating a copy for safekeeping, or both, so you have a reference when needed.

For installation, use a USB Windows installer (you can build one with an 8GB drive if necessary). Search for Media Creation Tool online and download it from Microsoft. Avoid the built-in factory reset—it’s not recommended.

Before installing, unplug the HDD after turning off your PC to prevent accidental changes. Once installed, run Windows updates until you see “No new updates.” Only then begin adding your own files, one at a time; don’t install multiple things simultaneously.

Finally, power down and reconnect the HDD before proceeding. Also, refrain from defragmenting the SSD—it’s not necessary.

Don't try to defrag an SDD. It's best to only do that on a hard drive.
