I was configuring keycard authentication using that manual, https://ubuntu.com/server/docs/security-smart-cards. Before it finished, I had to leave for work. Once back, I powered on my PC, decrypted the drive, but it refused to accept a password. (Video below) Can't recover the system drive? No backup or snapshot was made. I'm just starting with Linux.

Log in using tty (Ctrl+Alt+F2 or any key to F11). Input your username and password. Then attempt to restart the desktop manager with sudo systemctl restart gdm.

You’re asking how to set up your username and password, what format it should follow, and since you’re having trouble, you’re willing to try different approaches. It’s a common step when creating accounts, and there are standard guidelines you should follow. Just keep experimenting until it works!

Username input required. Password input required. If login remains unavailable, enter recovery mode and perform chroot to reset the user password. https://support.system76.com/articles/password/ Still can't log in? Re-enter recovery mode and attempt the Refresh install option. https://support.system76.com/articles/po...sh-install This will erase your Pop!_Install files, preserving only directories in your user home folder.

You notice the same output in TTY input and during recovery mode startup.

I plan to check out the options for reinstalling, recovering, or refreshing.

You might try booting from a PopOS Live USB and entering chroot. Revert the setup instructions from the manual. Check whether normal boot and login become possible. If recovery mode or refresh install fails, consider backing up your data from the drive and installing a fresh PopOS copy.
