I own an i7 8700 processor. The temperature has increased significantly over the past week. Usually, my system stays around 34-40°C with brief spikes up to 55°C for a moment. Last week it reached 62°C, now it goes to 70°C during Minecraft sessions for about 6-10 seconds before cooling down to 30-40°C in-game. The thermal paste was applied in October. This happens the same way no matter what power settings I use. Is this normal?
Is it excessive? Your CPU frequently switches to base and then increases its clock speed.
Typical game systems operate around 70°C, while many laptops reach 80 to 100°C during heavy use. The maximum temperature most devices can handle is usually about 102°C, which is well within the recommended range. If your MOBO allows keeping the CPU running beyond the time limit, feel free to enable it. (Note: Intel often imposes a cap on turbo speed in many models, but some offer an option to disable this.)
