Live stream from BC Children's Hospital charity event - what's happening?
Hello everyone (Pedro, please listen), I bought the Corsair/Starfield PC through a charity stream. Thought it would be nice to support a cause while upgrading my setup. My previous machine was housed in the same case as this one (Hyte Y60), so it occupied the same space, though this model has more RGB lighting than before. I kept the same number of fans as my old system.
When I talk about these specs, I’m assuming the noise and temperature behavior would be similar since I had the same fan count. Now I’m sharing these observations because I expect a comparable thermal performance. The machine tends to experience sudden overheating episodes—like it jumps from barely spinning to 85-100% fan speed in seconds, then settles again. This happens even though I wasn’t pushing the system hard.
While writing that sentence, it actually occurred and all the PC was running two Chrome tabs and Discord. I suspect some of the sound comes from the Corsair fans, which aren’t as refined, so their noise becomes more obvious compared to my old Noctua units.
The biggest issue is the RAM. It keeps failing during restarts, showing the MOBO LED lights. I’ve reset the EXPO settings and tried all available options, but nothing works. The system won’t power on when it’s set to “stock.” I think this points to a hardware fault rather than software.
Another concern is power management. My secondary display sometimes doesn’t get any signal from the PC, even though the primary one works fine. Resetting the machine doesn’t always solve it. The only fix is disconnecting and reconnecting the display. It seems to reset itself when I unplug and plug it back in.
Any suggestions on how to address these problems would be really helpful. I’ve assembled my own PCs for over ten years, but this is my first AMD GPU since my Radeon HD 7700 around 2012-2013. The upgrade from that to the RX 7900 XTX feels like a small jump.
For the screen, please specify the cable you're using. For my setup I needed to upgrade to a better quality cable to fix this issue. Regarding RAM: configure it for an extremely low speed with high timing, restrict CPU performance, and execute memtest86. If successful, increase the CPU clock back to normal and retest. Continue adjusting RAM settings in small increments (change setting → memtest86 → modify again). CC: @LMGcommunity
What are your specifications? The fan curve could be pushed VERY aggressively. Both AMD and Intel may experience sudden spikes in temperature or frequency when speed is needed. Not anything unusual, but some coolers might react extremely strongly to it. I don’t immediately know your AI but if it’s a smart software-controlled unit, you might need to revert speed control back to the BIOS or adjust the curve—it tends to be too sensitive. Running four dimmed fans is tricky; unless you have a very high RAM setup, this shouldn’t have been done out of the box. Since it’s an AMD system reaching 6000MHz with four sticks (assuming that’s their speed), it’s challenging and should have been built-in from the start by StarForge. Have you tried a different cable for the second display?
Hey, sorry to hear that the system is giving you trouble. RAM - We'd recommend taking out all the RAM and just putting in 2 sticks. Boot with EXPO and see if you run into issues. This can help isolate if it's a specific stick. - If you don't have issues with 2 then try all 4 again. - Sometimes the RAM just can't support the EXPO settings. FANS - Sounds like the fan curve in the BIOS is not setup right for some reason. You should be able to adjust fan curves based on which fan port they are plugged into. - You can also try installing the iCue software since the fans and the radiator are corsair iCue products and there is a fan hub with this build, might be able to adjust some stuff in the software. GPU - Change your cables before doing anything else since its the easiest thing to test. - If the GPU continues to fail outputting a signal to one of yor monitors we'd recommend reseating the GPU & then updating drivers and finally wiping and reinstalling if the issues continue. - If it continues to have issues then we recommend testing the setup without the riser for a bit to see if thats the issue.
