It functions well for most users. The issue arises when the shortcut or file isn't located in the Index area. Microsoft introduced a Global Index option under Settings > Search, which can be turned on. By default it's disabled because enabling it would slow things down as everything would need to be indexed. Many people have files outside the Documents folder or in personal directories, or the app isn't in the Start menu. Others may have disabled the Windows Search service through tweak tools or settings like "Optimize for gaming" or "Optimize PC." You could also check registry changes instead of the service itself. It's possible that indexing was interrupted, but rebuilding it via the Search Settings panel usually resolves the problem—though it won't fix it instantly, as the system must rebuild the index.
I think you and I belong to a massive group that hasn't encountered a BSOD before. I've installed Windows 10 on five different versions and everything has worked perfectly.
Never noticed BSODs lately... The insider program uses GSODs now xD WSLv1 in recent updates has been problematic. Frequent crashes when terminating processes aggressively.
My windows has undergone significant changes, yet the two aspects I didn’t alter are search index (probably still active, even if not) and pagefile. Although a standby list cleaner exists to assist with that, it might not be the primary concern. Generally, the Cortana search feature is limited to specific areas like documents and won’t locate most items on other drives. However, I realize now that using search on the correct drive is essential, which is the main constraint. It should still locate items quickly. When others say search is broken, they’re likely referring to the Cortana version, which at least functions partially. It seems like there are two distinct types: desktop/OS search versus drive-based search, with the latter being much slower when used alone. (I tested it, but it’s painfully slow.)
I focus only on point number 3 in the list. It bothers me a lot to constantly edit the registry so Windows doesn’t destroy wallpapers. It would be great if File History worked better. I upgraded from 2004 to 21H1 today to address the issue, but it didn’t fix it. Still, I’m here. Maybe I’ll just delete everything in the File History folder and start fresh, though that means I won’t be lazy about it.
