So there aren't many games available for that platform. Most PC titles from the PS2 have been adapted, but only a few have been made by popular companies. Many exclusive creators chose not to port their work, and other developers simply didn't bother.

They worked fine on PCSX2... Most old PC ports likely wouldn't perform well.

I've mostly encountered low-quality rims, and the saves often get damaged.

They’re ROMs that work directly with PCSX2. It can play PS2 discs and ISOs without issues. It’s a solid emulator in fact.
