Hi, I'm working on setting up Linux for a testing game server. I'm using Ubuntu Server 18.04 and only have two identical drives, so I need to install everything on the array. I tried installing Ubuntu first but got no options during setup. Then I attempted mdadm but it didn't work. I found an alternate installation method using an ISO, and Ubuntu Server reached the partitioning stage. I'm really stuck and would appreciate some guidance. Thanks!

You're facing a challenge on Ubuntu. Fedora and CentOS offer the chance to install Btrfs during setup, while Ubuntu provides its own instructions for following.

GRUB is still involved in Ubuntu's setup process. The article notes that GRUB2 was used in 1804 and mentions a requirement to install packages for mdadm to function properly.

The idea that you can’t start without a raid setup isn’t true. You can still configure it with Ubuntu Live and even install Ubuntu during the process.

I personally wouldn't try it. When I first encountered software RAID, it felt like a hassle. Since I'm not yet comfortable with Linux, I'd suggest sticking to simpler options until you're more familiar. What kind of game server are you thinking about, and do you really think RAID adds any real value for it?

I saw some responses now. I fixed it with an older Ubuntu Server version and tried the Get app in Ubuntu Desktop, then upgraded to the newest version.
