Opt for alternatives that don't rely on systemd or older packages. Choose modern distributions tailored to your needs.

I agree with @Dat Guy but I'm less critical about it. Systemd has been problematic for Linux. Pen testing isn't about the distribution. Feel free to choose what you like. (Mac OS is actually honest about this.) If you're aiming to look cool, just use whatever's in the newest Mr. Robot episode. Stickers are also a great way to display your skills.

He mentioned that you shouldn't restrict yourself to mastering tools for a single platform. The scope of your penetration testing journey might require proficiency with Windows, Linux, and macOS tools based on the systems you aim to compromise.

Thank you! I plan to utilize an Ubuntu-based desktop setup with a live Kali installation on a USB drive.

I suggest setting Arch or Gentoo as your primary distribution. Consider using Kali only within a virtual machine or as a live boot USB.

I’d be okay if the other person isn’t familiar with Linux. The main issue with using a VM is that certain programs may not function correctly or at all, particularly those relying on WiFi.
