Linux system experiencing unusual shutdown issue
Linux system experiencing unusual shutdown issue
I recently moved to kernel 6.6.13 from 6.5.0-5, which feels unusual to me despite not being a kernel specialist. Since then, I've experienced occasional strange delays in performance. These issues tend to appear under specific circumstances: the system is running close to 7–10 hours of uptime (as noted by Neofetch), the clock is often between midnight and 2 AM (during my late work or study hours), and sometimes the machine idles during that same period. These seem to be the only patterns I can reliably identify, as my overall usage has remained consistent over the past couple of years. Nothing significant has changed in what I do on the computer. Mostly, I engage in gaming, software development, virtualization, and general Chromium-based browsing.
My setup includes:
- Operating System: Debian GNU/Linux trixie/sid x86_64
- Kernel: 6.6.15-x64v3-xanmod1
- Uptime: About 12 minutes (just restarted after the latest incident)
- Installed Packages: 3077 (dpkg)
- Shell: bash 5.2.21
- Resolution: 2560x1440, 1440x900, 1920x1080, 1080x1920
- Display: DE – Plasma 5.27.10 WM – KWin Theme – Breeze (GTK2/3)
- Icons: candy-icons (Plasma), candy-icons (GTK2/3)
- Terminal: konsole
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X @ 3.400GHz
- GPU: AMD ATI Radeon RX 7900 XT / 7900 XTX
- RAM: 128GiB DDR4 3600 CL18 (G.Skill)
- Motherboard: ASUS TUF Gaming X570-Plus WiFi
Regarding my OS and software choices, I selected this version to get newer updates for running the 7900XTX and related applications. Everything has worked well until now, except these recurring problems. My goal was to use a non-standard kernel (XanMod) to address performance concerns, but it didn’t resolve the issue.
For memory, I have 128GiB of DDR4 3600 CL18 from G.Skill. All hardware passed diagnostics using PCDR Service Center 16 on a bootable USB drive.
The problem resembles Minecraft server lag—movement is possible, but interaction with objects or UI elements fails. For example:
- Neofetch in terminal freezes midway and never finishes.
- Shutting down the system causes repeated failures of SystemD services/daemons.
- YouTube videos stop and repeatedly buffer without reloading.
- Closing browsers leads to crashes, Brave won’t open until a full restart.
- Terminal commands like `sudo apt update` fail with password prompts.
Other web pages work fine, but YouTube is the only one affected.
I’ve tried:
- Switching to XanMod kernel (didn’t help).
- Booting from a Linux Mint USB and running fsck.
- Updating BIOS/UEFI firmware (details pending).
At 3 a.m., I’m sure more details will emerge if anyone asks or recalls something else. For now, any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
It seems the issue occurs intermittently, like a program overflowing memory. Closing it doesn't fix it, and commands work briefly before being interrupted again. You might want to test on a live Linux system and watch YouTube while doing so to observe if interruptions happen.
Check for delays by running journalctl to review kernel or system process issues. https://www.digitalocean.com/community/t...stemd-logs
Reviewing the logs from last night reveals a high volume of red and intense yellow entries. Please share the relevant sections that match the issues you're experiencing: the start time around 10:55PM with a large yellow warning, the emergence of red error messages shortly after, and the system behavior afterward. I'll note the specific moments when things began to deteriorate, especially around midnight and at 2am.
It looks like your system memory is acting up again. I tried using my own PCDR Service Center 16 setup. The investment didn’t go well—things are falling apart. Thanks for the support, G.Skill, but I’m hoping you’ll consider a warranty.
