For the OP, install various distributions on a USB drive and experiment with them. Learn how to navigate the terminal and use text editors such as vi and nano. This will give you a basic understanding of different distros.

Ubuntu or Debian makes a great beginning, the main distinction between Debian-based and Red Hat-based systems lies in the presence of crucial configuration files at /etc/sysconfig/ and the use of SELINUX rather than AppArmor. Log file formats are also a small variation.
