Normal performance without drivers occurs. It will revert to default settings available on any card, as it lacks specific information about your device or its capabilities.

You should remain capable of installing the NV drivers inside the VM.

GPUs typically lack the capability to handle higher resolutions without a proper driver. You should either download and install the official Nvidia drivers from their site yourself using an installation script, or opt for community-supported open-source drivers. Linux Mint may offer a built-in automatic driver manager in the settings, though this depends on the version.

They allow the GPU to function properly as intended. Without installing them, the operating system will rely on a backup method.

My GPU isn't up to date for Linux Mint 22.2. On Ubuntu 25.10 Based Distro I'm seeing 2560x1440 resolution without NVIDIA drivers, while Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Based has 1024x768.
