Linux for HTPC
Hello everyone, I'm thinking about upgrading to a new HTPC this autumn. I'm really interested in Linux—probably Ubuntu—and it would be great for both learning and cutting down on Windows 10 costs. The main reason holding me back is the Netflix 4K and audio problems. Are there other factors I should think about? Since I already have a dedicated gaming PC, my only needs are: streaming Netflix (and occasionally others), using Spotify, and playing video files directly from my NAS through File Explorer (no Plex needed). The setup sends everything to my AV receiver, which displays the content on a 4K TV and outputs it via speakers (likely 5.1 or 7.1). The Netflix limitation is that 4K video and surround sound are only accessible in the Windows 10 app, so the browser will show 1080p and stereo audio—this would be disappointing. My NAS contains surround sound streams like DTS/Atmos, and I’d like to enjoy those too. Do you think there are any compatibility issues with that configuration? Any advice?
