Hey, I'm looking to set up a Linux distribution on my old laptop. I need advice on which distros work best for older machines. Also, I want to install the AMD Graphics card—specifically the AMD MOBILITY RADEON HD 5470.
Mint is built on Ubuntu, which itself relies on Debian, making their guides helpful for troubleshooting. The desktop environment (Cinnamon) offers less clutter compared to Debian's Gnome3 or Ubuntu's Unity. Mint 18 runs on Ubuntu 16.04 and typically includes the open-source AMD driver by default, though you can add a paid version if needed.
Linux Mint with Xfce works well on systems under 1GB RAM. Most devices are automatically recognized by the kernel and installed. https://www.linuxmint.com/download.php
I'll also include Linux Mint. It performs very well without requiring much setup. When choosing the best distribution, it really depends on the user's needs—what they plan to use it for and how often. Still, give Mint a try and share your experience.
