In Linus' initial assessment of the 1920x Threadripper, their testbench featured DDR4-3200. After constructing a comparable setup with the 1920x and 32GB DDR4-3200, I've recently encountered BSODs. It appears DDR4-3200 doesn't match AMD's official specifications for that platform. Both the 1950x and 1920x models suggest a maximum of 2667MHz for this memory type. Given my recent hardware difficulties, it seems faster RAM might be the issue. Windows has been unstable, and BSODs keep appearing with varied error messages. I'm considering switching to Linux for a fresh start. My installation attempts have been unsuccessful, leading me to run MemTest86. Early results showed numerous failures between tests 3 and 7, prompting me to adjust settings and try various configurations. Eventually, everything stabilized after a successful Pop OS install. Later, I faced lockups and password issues on the encryption screen, which resolved once I cleared errors in MemTest86. After several trials, including slower DDR4-2400 and MemTest86+, the problems disappeared across configurations. I also attempted to run tests with a 4Gb CORSAIR Vengeance LPX DDR4-2400 stick, but no errors emerged. However, MemTest86+ consistently flagged issues in test 7, possibly due to incompatibility with Threadripper. Could using memory faster than recommended be the root cause? If so, what BIOS settings need adjustment to underclock to 2666MHz? Are there other steps I can take? This reviewer is unique in pointing out the memory speed recommendation and comparing it to overclocking concerns. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated—this has consumed three days of my time! For memory test failures, it's usually a sign that the hardware is faulty.
The system is running smoothly without any issues at its standard 3200MHz speed. I attempted a lower clock speed of 2666MHz, but memtest86 began reporting numerous errors. It seems the adjustment might have been done incorrectly. It’s currently functioning well, though there’s a risk it could fail again if recent changes occur.

I value all the updated details! There’s a lot new I didn’t realize. Particularly the point that DDR4 was only meant for 2666Mhz. You might have misinterpreted my configuration or I may not fully grasp your intent. Here’s a link to the RAM package I own, stating it operates at 3200MHz. I’ve included two photos of my BIOS demonstrating the settings; you’ll notice it naturally runs at that speed. The XMP profile assigned to this RAM lists DDR4-3200. I haven’t ever overclocked memory and have kept everything at auto as shown in Photo 1. In Photo 2 I choose the actual profile rather than auto, and it displays the standard frequency, DDR4-3200. If you examine my memtest86 results above, it confirms the memory is reading 3200MHz. I’ve never overclocked before. My concern is whether lowering the speed will improve stability given that the RAM operates above what the CPU suggests. If yes, do you have any guidance on adjusting it? I attempted to set the frequency to DDR4-2666 but memtest86 became unstable. Once I revert back to DDR4-3200, errors disappear. I’m uncertain if underclocking involves more than just changing the DRAM speed.
