Linksys Router Speed Problems
Linksys Router Speed Problems
Setup - Router: Linksys WRT 1900ACS Modem: Netgear CM500 ISP: Comcast (250 mbps) A week back and for a year, my average internet speed has been around 300mbps download and 11mbps upload. Recently, however, speeds have dropped to 100mbps or less with minimal download and upload (still decent but not ideal given the cost). I've tried power cycling and resetting the modem, reached out to Comcast several times, but they sent a technician without much progress. It seems like the issue might be with the router itself? I suspect this because restarting the router via Linksys Smart WiFi can restore speeds to 300mbps, though the next day it plummets again to 100mbps or less. I've also attempted a factory reset, but it didn't help. The router briefly hit 300mbps for a day before dropping again. Settings appear normal—media prioritization is off, no major changes needed, BIOS is up to date, and only I and my roommates are online. My warranty expired two months ago, so contacting support isn't an option right now. I'm running out of ideas since all tests were done over a wired connection; interference in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands is making speeds less reliable in my neighborhood. Any suggestions or troubleshooting tips would be appreciated! Would updating the router's firmware help? I used to run Lede with sqm, but my roommates claimed it was affecting their league ping. Thanks!
Connecting your computer straight to the Netgear modem ensures stable performance at 300/11 speeds.
I just tried it and everything matches what the modem says. I'm confirming online now, and I've updated the router's firmware.
Based on my observations, my routers consistently maintain stable internet performance. When troubleshooting, I follow these steps: 1) Connect directly to the modem and verify speed; if successful, proceed to the router. 2) Power cycle the router—switch it on/off—and recheck speed. 3) Perform a hard reset by resetting all settings to defaults and testing again. 4) Update firmware and reassess speed. If problems persist, contact support—they may request these actions or suggest alternatives. Warranty coverage typically allows return for defects, but ongoing issues likely point to ISP-related throttling or general network congestion.
It seems the problem is really confusing for me. I followed those steps, and the only fix is resetting or restarting. It works temporarily for a day or so, then speeds drop again. I asked Comcast about it, and they confirmed they’re not throttling (though I’m not near the 1tb limit). I’ve seen my Linksys and Xfinity tests show 300mbps, but sites like Google, speedtest.net, and DS reports say only 90mbps. Unfortunately, my warranty is over, so Linksys won’t assist anymore. Maybe I should try another router, but I don’t have a spare one.
