Right now I’m using two computers linked via a router. When trying to move files, speeds drop to just 5–10 MB/s. I have gigabit cards on both machines and the router supports 300 Mbps. I suspect the issue lies with the router itself. I’m considering a workaround: I’d install a solid 1 Gbps switch and connect both computers plus the router to it. Would that fix the problem or just reroute the traffic through the router?

It seems the router only supports 100Mbps connections. However, using a gigabit non-managed switch for around $30 could resolve the issue.

Based on what I understand, when moving data between these two devices, the router isn't essential except for DHCP management. A 1Gbit switch should resolve the issue. If everything works smoothly, you'd expect around 115MB/s (up to 125MB/s theoretically).
