Linear vs Openworld | Story and Gameplay
I enjoy both options, though open worlds can sometimes feel a bit too broad and reduce the experience. Linear games shine when they have a strong narrative; they’re simple and you stay focused on the main story without getting sidetracked by side tasks. Remember, I appreciate both styles, but linear is more comfortable if you just want to unwind.
Generally, most open-world games start to feel too predictable and boring.
I chose bananas since they blend my preference for linear and open world experiences at various moments. Linear games offer enjoyment through engaging narratives and excitement, while open worlds appeal when I need something casual or want to play without focusing deeply.
I often appreciate how open-world games allow free exploration, yet sometimes feel like just a path to follow. Generally, linear titles invest more thought into every detail of the environment you traverse. The typical case is when a straightforward game presents a specific perspective or places intriguing elements along a route you must walk. In contrast, open-world experiences often lack this depth, and you might overlook interesting spots if you rush through the narrative. A great illustration is early in Bioshock Infinite, where a simple walk leads to an unexpected discovery. It’s not spoilers, but if you haven’t experienced it, avoid watching it since it offers a delightful twist. In more open-world games, such moments would be missed by many, as players might have taken a different route or missed the opportunity. Such unique moments shine best in linear formats.
It's similar to comparing apples and oranges while still favoring open world most of the time.
I went with open world, however I find it hard to vote against The Last of Us. It is an amazing game and I think has many strengths over the open world games we have.
Happy to notice everyone is in agreement about the open world trend.
